Got out my paints and brushes this morning and started in on the doll faces. The beginning stages of the eyes went pretty well, but I had trouble working on the lips: the doll skin is so smooth and hard, the paintbrush just glided over it without applying any paint. So I used an emery board to sand the lips a bit and roughen them up. After that, the paint went on much better.
I'm finding that repainting really is more difficult than I expected. That is to say, I thought the greatest difficulty was in knowing what to do, not so much in actually doing it. But getting the paint to flow correctly is tricky, and after that, you still have to paint those lines on evenly, symmetrically, and in the right place. And as I go on with process, there's bound to be more difficult parts ahead.
For Maxie and Tuesday, my first two "volunteers," I'm going to make them as pretty as I can, but concentrate more on gaining experience in technique so that I can improve in the future.
